Overview
Non-EU students need a residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) to study in Germany. The student permit (§16b AufenthG) is typically issued for 2-3 years based on your study program length.

Before Coming to Germany
Most non-EU students:
- Apply for a student visa in their home country
- Enter Germany with that visa (usually valid 3 months)
- Convert it to a residence permit in Munich

How to Apply
Step-by-step process:
- Complete Anmeldung first (city registration)
- Go to the Munich Immigration website
- Fill out the online application form
- Upload all documents (PDF/JPG format)
- Submit the application
- Save the confirmation PDF - very important!
What happens next:
- KVR checks your documents
- They may request additional documents
- You receive an appointment invitation for fingerprints/photo/pickup
Processing time: Usually 4-8 weeks
