What is Anmeldung?

Anmeldung is the mandatory city registration that every resident in Germany must complete within 14 days of moving into a new address. This is required by law.

You need this registration for:

  • University enrollment (sometimes required)
  • Opening a bank account
  • Mobile phone / internet contracts
  • Receiving your Tax ID (sent to your registered address)
  • Applying for a residence permit

Where Do I Go?

Register at a Bürgerbüro (citizen's office). There are several locations in Munich:

  • Ruppertstraße 19 (Main KVR location)
  • Orleansstraße 50 (Haidhausen)
  • Leonrodstraße 21 (Neuhausen)
  • Hanauer Straße 56 (Moosach)
  • Forstenrieder Allee 61a (Forstenried)
  • Riesenfeldstraße 75 (Milbertshofen)

💡 Tip: Smaller offices outside the center often have shorter wait times.

Booking an Appointment

⚠️ Important: You ALWAYS need an appointment. No walk-ins allowed.

Pro tips:

  • Appointments open 2 weeks in advance at midnight
  • Set an alarm for 23:59 and refresh at 00:00 for best availability
  • Try different Bürgerbüro locations - some have better availability

Required Documents

Must bring:

  1. Passport (and visa, if applicable)
  2. Wohnungsgeberbestätigung - Landlord confirmation form

What Happens at the Appointment

The process is straightforward:

  • Bank accounts
  • Health insurance
  • Residence permit applications
  • Various contracts

After Registration

What you'll receive:

  • Meldebescheinigung immediately at the office
  • Tax ID (Steuer-ID) arrives by mail in 2-4 weeks

⚠️ Important: Make sure your name is on the mailbox to receive your Tax ID!
