Your First Weeks in Munich: Complete Checklist

Before Arrival (If Possible)

  • Book temporary accommodation (Airbnb, hostel, friends)
  • Get travel insurance for the first days
  • Prepare Wohnungsgeberbestätigung form for landlord to sign
  • Have digital copies of all documents (passport, visa, admission letter)
  • Download MVG app for public transport

Week 1: Essential Setup

Day 1-3:

  • Get a German SIM card (Aldi Talk, Lidl Connect, O2)
  • Buy an MVV transport ticket (Isarcard, single tickets, or day pass)
  • Book Anmeldung appointment ASAP at muenchen.de/termin
    • ⚠️ Must register within 14 days of moving in!
    • Try booking at midnight when new slots open

Day 4-7:

  • Complete Anmeldung at Bürgerbüro
    • Bring: Passport, Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, registration form
    • Get your Meldebescheinigung (keep safe!)
  • Open a bank account (N26, Commerzbank, Sparkasse, Deutsche Bank)
  • Apply for health insurance (AOK, TK, DAK, Barmer)

Week 2: University & Residence Permit

  • Complete university enrollment (Immatrikulation)
  • Get student ID (Studierendenausweis)
  • Activate MVV semester ticket at MVG center or online
  • (Non-EU students): Apply for residence permit online
    • Need: Anmeldebestätigung, health insurance, blocked account/funds proof
    • Save the confirmation PDF!
  • Set up your blocked account withdrawal if needed

Weeks 3-4: Settling In

  • Receive Tax ID (Steuer-ID) by mail - check your mailbox!
    • Make sure your name is on the mailbox
  • Register for university courses
  • Explore your campus and neighborhood
  • Join student groups / Moroccan community (MSV, Marokkanische Studentenverein)
  • Set up GEZ broadcasting fee or apply for student exemption
    • Students on BAföG or low income can be exempt
  • Get a library card (Stadtbibliothek München)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
